Prior to develop the index for each title, we talk to
our customer and the book’s author to confirm type and level
of index (one-, two-, or three-level; topic and name),
intended audience, and editorial style requirements. Our
indexers review the entire text to identify entries and
subentries to be indexed and rotated. Each index is edited
for compliance with the project style sheet. We use custom
indexing programming to support our indexing, but each entry
is chosen and written by an editor.
When the manuscript has been typeset and page proofs are
ready, we will ask you to compile the index unless other
arrangements have been agreed. You may find it helpful to
note keywords as you write your book, to act as a basis
for this later work but please do not begin compiling
an index without consulting the Books Editorial Department.
